Images speak. Long before a word is read or heard, they set the tone—evoking emotion, framing context, and inviting us into a silent dialogue. Whether it’s a painting, a poster, or a passing illustration, we are always in conversation with what we see.

Today, one of the most important conversations unfolding is around AI. At Microsoft, we see AI as a companion that lights up our boldest ideas and helps us turn ideas into reality. We believe deeply in its ability to enrich everyday life, amplify creativity, and expand our shared human potential. Conversation is also a two-way street. Our company beliefs live within a global community of billions and as a new and profound technology, AI evokes a wide range of emotions. Curiosity, fear, excitement, unease, anticipation, wonder—communicating our stance on AI amid this broader tapestry takes intentionality and craft.

A collage of diverse Instagram posts features cheerful people, travel destinations, music notes, and colorful patterns. Texts include motivational and creative prompts, like “Answer your creative calling” and “Help bring a dream to life.”.

As designers and creatives, we shape experiences through color, texture, media, and more. But AI’s complexity demands something more: a world-building approach that fosters trust, transparency, and empowerment. Expressive design thinking becomes essential here, transforming AI from an abstract notion into a tangible and resonant experience. So, how should it look when we talk about AI? How can we use design to set a conversational stage that invites multiple perspectives while also encapsulating our positive outlook? These questions spurred the creation of the Microsoft AI Expression system, our company-wide way of showing how AI can enrich everyday life. Through color palettes, typography, graphical elements and more, we are upleveling how we express our AI ethos through visual codes, offering a narrative of progress that centers humanity at every step. It will soon be visible everywhere from imagery accompanying a single blog post to the look and feel of major conferences like Build or Ignite.

It also feels apt to debut our AI Expression system on the heels of Microsoft’s 50th anniversary. Our founding sparked a global conversation about how computing should shape people’s daily life, from education to gaming to productivity. Fifty years later, those same questions now apply to AI, with arguably even more urgency. As an early and ongoing dialogue, it’s one that will continuously shift; the technology itself is still emergent, and we’re constantly listening to and learning from our customers and broader global community. Our AI Expression system is flexibly designed to allow for real-time shifts, while remaining rooted in our strong belief that if you can dream it, you can achieve it! Here’s a look at how we’re offering a narrative of progress that centers humanity at every step via subtle yet immersive expression for AI:

Artifacts of Life (Illustration)

A central element of the Microsoft AI Expression system, these representations, both abstract and literal, reflect the incredible things people can imagine and create with AI. Rooted in global culture and human heritage, they capture dimensions of work, creativity, leisure, and learning, symbolizing the bridge between dreams and reality. By showcasing artifacts of life, we emphasize AI’s role in transforming aspirations into tangible achievements.

A grid displays various colorful, abstract 3D icons organized into categories: Work and Productivity, Tech and Innovation, Learning and Development, Daily Life and Leisure, and Creativity and Entertainment. Each icon has a unique, vibrant design.

Whether it’s a collaborative diagram representing teamwork, a vibrant illustration of creative sparks, or tools visualized for productivity, these artifacts demonstrate AI’s ability to enhance the human experience. They remind us that at its heart, AI is not about replacing creativity but amplifying it. This concept aligns perfectly with our commitment to empowerment: AI doesn’t just serve functional needs; it enriches our lives, helping us realize the potential of our boldest visions. In every depiction, artifacts of life ground our narrative in humanity while showcasing the boundless possibilities unlocked by Microsoft AI.

A joyful person holds a laptop and red papers, with text bubbles saying "Human at the center" and "Surrounded by what's imagined." Adjacent is an abstract image with "Human ideas at the center" and "Surrounded by imagination." Both feature “You, empowered.”.
A person in sunglasses and a hat lies on lush green grass with arms behind their head, appearing relaxed. Overlaid text reads, "Find me a countryside retreat.

Focus on people

While some approaches emphasize AI as a tool for productivity or surface-level creativity, Microsoft envisions AI as a transformative partner in realizing our mission: to empower every person and every organization on the planet to achieve more. As AI barrels forward, we fear losing what makes us unique. In the rush to define AI’s potential, some narratives have unintentionally distanced the human element, replacing the joy of creativity with the mundane. The Microsoft AI Expression places humanity at its core, celebrating life’s dreams, goals, and desires. Instead of replacing people, we’re empowering them. Design must remain inherently human.

Five examples of AI image generation styles: from left to right, "Painting" with soft, blended colors; "Digital" with sharp, defined hues; "Sweeping" with gradient tones; "Chaos" with vibrant, textured patterns; and "Background galaxies" with abstract designs.
Two rectangles side-by-side show the phrase "You, empowered" on vibrant backgrounds. The left is red with a gradient to pink and purple, labeled "Vibrant," "Dimensional," "Human." The right is blue with a gradient to green and purple, similarly labeled.

Nothing’s Perfect

Inspired by the analogue, the imperfect, the haze of a summer afternoon, we lean into the elements that make us human as an antidote to the digital, the cold, the unfeeling, and the unknown. Grain and warm gradients bring our ideas into focus, answer our curiosity, and fulfill our desires. Just as large language models bring images to life through diffusion, our soft glow and grain gestures hint at ideas forming, gathering shape, and ultimately coming to life. It’s a visual metaphor for AI’s limitless potential—and a reminder that even the future should feel human.

A Clear Message

To amplify our perspective, we needed a typographic language that felt both familiar and fresh—one that speaks with clarity, honesty, and warmth. Segoe, our Microsoft brand typeface, becomes something new in this context. By using a lighter weight and adjusting the tracking, we introduce a tone that is clear and approachable. It invites trust, engaging the reader without pretense or ornament. It’s not just typography—it’s a quiet but confident voice that reflects the human-centered values at the heart of our AI Expression system.

Looking Out, Looking In

If our expression is a celebration of human potential—unlocked and expanded through AI—then our visual language must reflect that same richness and possibility. We lean into the vivid, the personal, the bright spark of real life. Our imagery is rooted in close, candid moments, often captured through wide-angle lenses that bring a sense of intimacy and expansiveness all at once. Paired with illustration, this technique pulls the human to the center of the story, where they belong. There’s a subtle familiarity to it all. The images feel recent but timeless, modern yet touched by the warm imperfection of film. It’s a visual balance that evokes a hint of nostalgia while anchoring us in the incredible, in-progress moment we’re living in together now.

As AI rapidly evolves, how people approach and perceive it will continuously shift. Our AI Expression system is flexible by design, allowing us to reflect and respond to dialogues as they unfold. Today, we’re showing possibility and imagination through highly saturated colors and maximalist worlds. As the conversation continues, our AI Expression will evolve to reflect nuanced moments of learning and discovery. By focusing on people rather than features, and achievements rather than updates, we create an enduring narrative that anchors customers and employees in our shared goals and mission. This approach forms a continuous loop, grounding innovation in our core purpose and reconnecting it to the human experience. After all, if AI isn’t designed for us, then who is it for?

In a world that’s often fixated on specs and performance, our approach keeps the focus on real people and their stories. By weaving empathy, flexibility, and a dash of wonder into everything we do, we’re showing that AI isn’t just a tech upgrade—it’s a human one.
